2015/01/10 - General Membership Meeting
General Membership Meeting Minutes - January 10, 2015
Location: K-Macho’s Restaurant and Cantina, Olathe, Kansas
Attendance: Donna Abdul-Haqq, Stan Belk, Doug Bridwell, Bob Foos, Pam Franse, Bart Klein, Robert Lindwall, Mike Newburger, Richard and Evon Repaire, Vern Rowland, Jack and Kathleen Royer, Brad Tally, Phil Turner, Jim and Sam Wehunt
The meeting was called to order at 11:45am – thanks to preliminary and congenial conversation between all familiar faces in attendance, the customary “round the table introductions” were dispensed with and there was need only to introduce Ms. Pam Franse to the group. Hopefully Pam will see fit to join us in the future, “recruited” by her friend Stan Belk.
First order of business was to report on the progress, construction and otherwise, at Volvo of Overland Park. Sales and lease opportunities for the S60 and XC60 models were outlined and Bart Klein was even kind enough to have his new S60T6 parked right outside the door of the restaurant should anyone want a look see. No new XC90s are at the dealership yet but orders will happily be taken.
Bart Klein, Chapter Vice President and member of the VCOA Board of Directors, offered remarks and information from recent VCOA meetings and conversations. No date or location has been established yet for the 2015 National meeting.
As outdoor activity has been negligible since the November meeting, there was nothing of significance to report on “Volvo Related” – however it was a great pleasure to announce the birth, back in October, of Harper Josefin Porter, happy and healthy daughter of members Brandon and Meghan Porter (The only child I know of in the area that has a “Onesie” with a picture of a 240 Wagon printed on it.)
Richard Repaire gave a short report on his surgically repaired leg – but stopped at letting people sign his boot! Swatting at us with his crutches. Robert Lindwall stopped short of detailing his recent oral surgery, preferring to slowly, and nearly silently, sip his soup. Phil Turner gave a quick update on the progress through rehabilitation of Bob Hans up in Lincoln. Slow but encouraging.
President Turner reported on his recent efforts to edit the eMail listing for chapter correspondence which had grown to 380+ addresses. Thus far, thanks to “bouncing” eMails, and politely worded responses in the negative, the list has been reduced to 318. 40 members have responded to this poll in the affirmative, indicating an ongoing desire to continue to receive meeting announcements and other correspondence relating to their fellow Volvo devotees and opportunities to join with them in interesting activities. With a January 31st cut off date for responding back, it is hoped to get this roster of the Hard Core members pared down to a more manageable level.
Turner then went on to provide a summary of the “planned” events for 2015 –
- March 7th – Greater Kansas City International Auto Show. Two club member cars will be on display along with the New Volvos at the Volvo of Overland Park area.
- April 18th/19th “Road Trip” to the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, NE an overnight event with a decent dinner to be involved.
- May 2nd – Club Picnic, Parkville, MO – moving on to the Parkville “Cruise In” afterwards.
- June 12th thru 14th – “Midsommar” VCOA regional event at Hannibal, MO
- July 11th – Club meeting and participation in the Church of the Resurrection Car Show, Leawood, KS
- September 19th – 3rd Annual Mid-Missouri Meet Up with the Gateway Chapter. Marceline, MO is the current pick for the “Mid-Missouri” location, complete with the Walt Disney boyhood home museum.
- October 10th – Svensk Hyllningsfest in Lindsborg, KS
- The site and date of the 2015 VCOA National Meeting has not been released yet.
The meeting was then thrown open to comments from the floor. Condolences were offered to Brad Tally for the recent, untimely and tragic passing of his father in a traffic accident in Florida. Bart Klein, Web Site “Master”, repeated his request for members to provide him with photos of their cars for the “Members and Their Cars” album on the site. Phil Turner challenged all present to come up with additional suggestions for car related activities over the course of the year.
The meeting was formally adjourned at 1:00pm with most attendees sticking around for food, drink and more congenial conversation and “Model Specific Volvo Car Networking”.
Next meeting – March 7, 2015 – The Quaff Bar and Grill with a visit to the 2015 Greater Kansas City International Auto Show at Bartle Hall. A modest supply of complimentary passes will be available, courtesy of Volvo of Overland Park at the membership meeting. First come – First served.
