Midsommar 2018 Wrap Up

MIDSOMMAR 2018 Wrap up

The Volvo Club of Kansas City, also affectionately known as “The Heart of America Chapter – VCOA”, hosted the 2018 VCOA Regional “Midsommar” meeting and car show in Lindsborg, Kansas over the weekend of June 15th – through June 17th.

This is the fourth time that our club/chapter has graced “Little Sweden – USA” with our presence along with a myriad collection of classic and contemporary Swedish Automobiles. There seems to be a symbiotic relationship between our members and the North American Swedes (and Swede “wannabe’s”) gathering in central Kansas.

2008 – VCOA Regional Midsommar Event

2011 – VCOA National Event

2013 – “Hyllnings Fest”  (“Pioneer Festival” if you don’t speak Swedish)

2018 – VCOA Regional Midsommar Event

A total of 57 participants with 31 cars were at the event, coming from 10 different States, with the “Longest Distance” award going to Timothy Shortle, driving his 2007 XC90 Sport in from Durango, Colorado – barely beating out our own club member Lornie Haugen who drove in from Franklin, Wisconsin in his 2012 S-60  (“Honorable Mention” should also be given to Richard Repairre who came in from Anderson, South Carolina – but he cheated and used a Mooney K-252 airplane instead of a Volvo – thus disqualified!)

Over the three day period of the show the participants were offered the enjoyment of:

  • A Fun Filled Cruise from Olathe, Kansas to Salina, Kansas (site of the official event Hotel) – with a stop for lunch at the historic Hays House Restaurant (and former Stage Coach Stop) in Council Grove, Kansas.
  • A guided tour of the Automotive Restoration Program facilities at McPherson College – offering the only four-year degree program in this “discipline” in the United States.
  • A “Photo Opportunity” atop Coronado Heights – the spot where (supposedly) the Spanish conquistador Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, gave up on his quest to find the fabled “Eldorado” – the city of Gold, said “To Hell with this” (in Spanish of course) and turned back to return to Mexico.
  • A “Volvo’s Only!” car show in downtown Lindsborg, Kansas
  • Buffet Banquet and Awards Ceremony in Heritage Park, Lindsborg, Kansas
  • The opportunity to mingle with the aforementioned “Swedes” at their “Midsommar” festival activities.
  • A personally guided two-hour tour of the collection of Roger Morrison  featuring some 25+ cars ranging from early Rolls Royces and Bentleys, 1960’s “Muscle Cars”,  to current day “Exotics” – each one fully drivable!
