The Heart of America Chapter of VCOA met at noon on 11/12/16 for the final meeting of the year.  Chapter president Mike Newburger called the meeting to order.

Treasurer’s Report provided by Jim Henderson reported approximately $2,100 in the coffers for the Chapter.  All bills have been paid and there are no outstanding expenses at this time.

Bart Klein, Board Member & Secretary of VCOA, noted that the 2017 National Meet will be hosted by the newly formed Green Country VCOA Chapter out of Tulsa OK. The meet will be held from Oct 20-22, 2017. Planning is underway and the Green Country chapter is moving quickly in their planning. Bart has indicated that he will participate with the committee that has been formed for the meet.

Phil Turner reported that the 4th Annual Mid-Missouri Meet-Up was a resounding success. There were 13 cars and a total of 24 people who met in Camdenton MO. We first dined at the Golden Rock Winery before taking a tour of the Bridal Cave. Based on conversations with the Gateway Chapter of VCOA, it was agreed that in 2017 the “Meet Up” should again be held at the Historic Old Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City.

No plans have been made for the 2017 MidSommar event. The Ozark Rollers Chapter has been contacted about hosting the event for 2017 as we have normally rotated the responsibility for hosting the event between the three chapters in Kansas City, St. Louis and Arkansas.

For the year 2017, the administration and leadership of the chapter will be managed by a “Gang of Five”. This group will be responsible for coordinating the chapter activities. Jeff Schuman noted that the following chapter members were nominated via an online survey prior to the chapter meeting:

  • Bart Klein
  • Brad Tally
  • Glen McMillin
  • Jim Henderson
  • Phil Turner

The “Gang of Five” committee information has been posted on the http://kc-vcoa.org website along with the chapter meeting dates for 2017, which will remain on the 2nd Saturday of every other month schedule as in the past.  The chapter web site has been updated with the change.

Brad Tally suggested, and it was agreed, that a member of the Facebook based Volvos of KC Club also participate with the Gang of Five. Keithley Lake agreed to act as that representative and volunteered to host one of the chapter meetings at their location. The members present agreed to accept Brad’s idea. Dates will be reviewed between Bart and Keithley to select a potential meeting date and site.

Jim Henderson displayed a copy of the “Kansas City Car Action” magazine. The current issue featured an article about his son, David’s shop, Empire Automotive located in Kansas City, Kansas.

Two representatives from Volvo of Overland Park attended and provided updates on the upcoming products from Volvo as well as the remodel underway at the dealership. The chapter welcomes the partnership with the dealership and is eager to strengthen it in the year ahead.

Recognition was given to Mike Newburger for his service as president of the chapter over the past year. Mike will continue to play a major role with the chapter.

The “Sons of Norway” officers have taken over for our late member, Robert Lindwall in regards to keeping the Volvo community informed and involved about Scandinavian activities in the area. This year the Scandinavian Christmas Dinner will be held on 12/10/16 at the First Lutheran Church in Mission Hill, KS. If you are interested in attending, your reservations must be made by 11/30/16.
