Please note that this meeting is a change from the ordinary in that the meeting time has been changed to 3:00pm and the location is (for the second meeting in a row!) being held under the new club sun shelter out in the open at the KCI Cruise – Car show  (The old WireCo and former Farmland Building east of KCI & I-29.)     Bring your lawn chairs!

Enjoy a car show near Kansas City International Airport!

Club member Volvos have been represented at this “Cruise In – Car Show” for many years.  No registration is needed, the event is free, and here are some other specifics:

Hundreds of classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods, rat rods, exotics and imports will be on hand in a casual, un-judged atmosphere.  A Moon Bounce will be on hand for the kids.  Bring lawn chairs and shade!

Cruise Nights or Cruise Ins the latest craze in car culture where owners of classic, muscle and other special interest autos gather to show off their prized possessions and share their love of cars with other enthusiasts and anyone who likes cars.  There is no real cruising occurring, as vehicles are parked in a parking lot, usually with hoods open to display engine chrome and detailing.  Participants “hang out” by their cars and motorcycles or wander to admire others’ rides, and the general public shows up to enjoy them, as well.

The Kansas City Aviation Department plans the events as fund raisers for the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s Combined Charities program, which bundles a variety of local, regional and national charities.  Prizes are donated by tenants and area businesses.

$1 per chance to score great prizes like tickets to Kansas Speedway and sporting events!  Plus hotel stays, car rentals, Zona Rosa gift cards, dinners, gangster tours, town car rides, baseball bats, hot rod parts, KCI parking and more!!  There will also be a $1-a-chance 50/50 drawing.  KCI concessionaire HMS Host and Pepsi will donate hot dogs, chips and drinks for sale toward the charity so bring some green!

Additional Information -

The 2nd annual “Mid Missouri Meet Up” scheduled for Saturday, August 23rd at the Old Missouri State Prison in Jefferson City, was cancelled due to the “Heat Wave”.   The Gateway Chapter organizers are busy with their attempts to reschedule this event for September or October.

The Kansas City All British Car Club has been actively seeking our joint participation in their events and for the first time ever has opened up their annual Car and Cycle Show to include Swedish Cars!   They even have established a special Judging Class for us.   Thus,  I would like to ask that any of the regional club members that can possibly attend bring their prized Volvo to this event which is being held on Sunday, August 31st at the Zona Rosa (I-29 & NW Barry Road) on the 2nd level of the NW Parking Garage (by Dillards).    Register on site Sunday morning from 8:00am – 10:30am.

The schedule of events for the car show runs from 10:30am – Noon with “Peoples Choice Voting”, and from 11:00am – 2:00pm a “Fun Driver’s Rodeo.   Additional information about the venue and amenities located within walking distance of the event site can be found on their web site     Even with an entry fee of $20.00, I would really like to see a good number of shiny Volvos at this event as their leadership has been most cordial and persuasive in regards to future “joint efforts” with us Swedish Car types.   Any questions about registration or other specifics can be addressed to

VCOA National Event –

Club/Chapter Web Site –

I am happy to announce that the long awaited Club Web Site is back up and running with current information - and it will be further improved and updated in the near future.  Please reference it at the internet address above and check out the information and photos – plus if you have a favorite photo of your Volvo please forward it on in electronic format to Bart Klein  for inclusion in the Gallery reserved for Members and their Cars.

Hendrick Volvo –

Hendrick Volvo of Kansas City is running a Labor Day Special sale with some serious “End of Summer Specials” on the 2014 – 2015 models with additional savings for VCOA members.     The dealership always offers the 10% VCOA member discount on service and parts

I have been asked by several members about club participation in the Grand Opening of the IKEA store in Merriam, KS on September 10th.    I have been in contact with the marketing arm of IKEA corporate since before the initial ground breaking ceremony last year and have not received any “favorable” response to my repeated offers of prize winning, show quality Volvo cars of all vintage (and their equally colorful owners, again of all vintage) for display at these events.    I am now working to see if we can hold one of our regular meetings at their facility with a “mini car show outside” while we eat Swedish Meat Balls at their café and enjoy a leisurely stroll through their showrooms.

Finally, if you have not already purchased a “Heart of America Volvo Club” logo Polo Shirt, there will be a supply on hand at the September 13th meeting.  $25.00 each.
